Independence National Historical Park – Pennsylvania

The seeds of independence from Great Britton and the birth of a new nation took root in the city of Philadelphia and the sites and buildings protected and celebrated in Independence National Historical Park.

It was in the Independence Hall Assembly Room where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776. Subsequently in Congress Hall, George Washington was sworn in for his second term as the first president, and even more significantly, John Adams was sworn in as the second president, completing the nation’s first peaceful transfer of power.

This is a place to reflect on the values spelled out in the Declaration of Independence as well as our Constitution, not only the individual right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but also to the ideal of the common good. Benjamin Franklin was once asked what kind of government had been created by the Constitutional Convention of 1787. His reply: “A republic, if you can keep it.” This notion has been challenged in the past few years like never before and although the people of that day created democracy for us, it is up to the people of this day, and all days going forward, to determine whether or not we will keep it.
