Ellis Island – Statue of Liberty National Monument – New York

Ellis Island, part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, was first used by the federal government for immigration purposes in 1892 with the current French Renaissance-style building opening in 1900. Until it closed in 1954 over 12 million immigrants were processed through this facility. The primary point of entry was the Registry Room (Great Hall) where during the peak years of 1900 to 1924 as many as 5,000 people would pass by immigration officers each day.

Several members of my family passed through the halls of this building, from Italy and Czechoslovakia, on their way to Chicago and homesteading opportunities in northern Minnesota. Unless you are of Native American descent it’s a good bet many of your ancestors also passed through Ellis Island. None of them were invited to come to the United States, they all just stepped off of ships and showed up on our doorstep after which they fanned out to every corner of the country and contributed to the diverse melting pot which is uniquely American.

Thanks for the great pics and reminder of this part of history. I vividly recall visiting and looking up the records of my Nana who came over with her family from the former Yugoslavia.
