Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge – North Carolina

Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is located on one of the easternmost land masses of North Carolina outside of the Outer Banks islands. The refuge protects wetlands, swamps and waterways around the Alligator River.

This was a too-close-to-skip park which I visited because I had some extra time and was curious about what I might see. I expected there may be alligators, thus the name, but I was completely surprised to see black bears in this area and a lot of them; in about eight hours of cruising through the park (over two days) I saw at least six bears, two with young cubs. The swamp was also filled with turtles, birds and interesting trees and plant life. As it turned out this was a well-worth-the-time stop on my trip to the Outer Banks area of North Carolina.

Awww… that has to be the tiniest and cutest little cub ever photographed! Nice set of shots - takes you right into the swamp!
