Mount Rainier National Park – Washington

In the past I visited Seattle and western Washington four times before I even laid eyes on Mount Rainier; 14,410 feet of glacier capped magnificence. Now as I traveled the roads from Yakima heading west toward Mount Rainier National Park, winding through hills and mountains shrouded by smoke from the nearby Schneider Springs forest fire, I worry about how much of the mountain I would see this trip. Then I round a corner and catch a glimpse of the mountain in the early morning sun followed by the full view of its vertical mass seeming to tower directly over me even from a distance. It is an awe-inspiring sight, which for me, only Denali in Alaska can rival.

Today I was here to meet another National Park traveler, and PBase artist, who I have corresponded with over the years as we have jumped from park to park photographing our experiences. John Tangney, ( PBase gallery: https://pbase.com/jctangney ) who lives several hours away in Oregon, has visited Mount Rainier over forty times and agreed to meet me here for the day to do some hiking. I was the lucky one as it was like having an experienced guide to lead me over the trails around the Paradise area and fill me in on the sights, animals and plants we were seeing in the alpine wilderness.

This park literally revolves around the mountain and there are spectacular views of Rainier to be photographed throughout the park, however, catching the reflection of Mount Rainier in the Reflection Lakes and Tipsoo Lake were some of my favorite experiences. As always, it is imperative to get to your destination early for the best light and a chance to catch the water at its calmest. And on this day, I was also able to grab a shot of a Mountain Goat; an elusive target, at least as far as I was concerned…

Simply amazing images Jerry. I was amazed with the clarity of most, given the smoke issues. But I like the way that you use the smoke when required. The early morning shot is reminiscent of 19th century master paintings.
