Capitol Reef National Park – Cathedral Valley – Utah (2019)

Images of Capitol Reef National Park, Cathedral Valley – Central Utah, taken in July 2019.

I headed out early to make the trip to the remote Cathedral Valley in the northern section of Capitol Reef National Park. From Utah Highway 24 it was 15.3 miles on a dirt road to the point where you reach the Temples of the Sun and the Moon. They were spectacular in the early morning light, especially with the contrast on the shadow side of each formation.

The whole time I was in the Cathedral Valley I only ran across two other cars and one was a 4-wheel drive tour with an elderly couple…and we ran across each other three separate times. After getting my images of the temples I headed north nine more dirt road miles to the Gypsum Sinkhole which was interesting but in the end it was just a hole, however, in the area near Cathedral Junction there were some volcanic dikes and more ‘temple-like’ formations that proved to be remarkable.
