Yosemite National Park – Mariposa Grove – California (2019)

With the signing of legislation by President Lincoln in 1864 this was the first Sequoia grove and, along with the Yosemite Valley, the first natural areas to be set aside and protected by the federal government. John Muir then brought President Theodore Roosevelt here in 1903 and in 1906 it was included as part of Yosemite National Park.

I started on the Big Trees Loop Trail which took me past the Fallen Monarch and then took the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail past a grouping of trees called the Bachelor and Three Graces to the Grizzly Giant itself. This is an amazing tree; Standing 209 feet tall it’s base 28 feet in diameter and 96 feet in circumference! But most impressive is the arm about half way up that is a full 7 feet in diameter. “Grizzly” is a good name for this tree as all the arms give it a unique profile.

A side trail takes you to a tree that is famous for a different reason; the California Tunnel Tree was cut in 1895 to allow coaches to pass through it as a scheme to attract visitors to the area. This is now the only living Giant Sequoia with a tunnel in it.
