2019 Saguaro National Park Snow - Arizona

On February 22, 2019 I woke to a site not often seen in the desert surrounding Tucson Arizona…SNOW. Large flakes floating down from above and covering everything in sight; a blanket of the white stuff where the desert once was…

I don’t like the cold and snow is the visual representation of being cold, feeling cold; dampness and desolation, the lack of warmth. In Tucson we like to say that if we want to see snow, we go to it, it doesn’t come to us! Yet there it was. This happens here periodically, rarely, just enough to remind the transplants from the north and east of what they were escaping. They often laugh at the chaos created by a dusting like this and remind everyone that this kind of snow doesn’t even slow people down where they come from whereas here it tends to clog traffic and sometimes shuts down schools and banks.

I wasn’t happy at first, and then I realized that this might well be an opportunity to photograph the desert in a way that it is not often seen. So I headed off to my “home” park, Saguaro National Park, where I found an interesting landscape made even more interesting by that cold, damp white stuff…SNOW.
