Glen Canyon National Recreational Area encompasses over 1.2 million acres of land in northern Arizona and southern Utah and is dominated by Lake Powell which was created in 1972 when the Colorado River was dammed by the Glen Canyon Dam. The recreational area is bordered by the Grand Canyon and Vermilion Cliffs in the south and Canyonlands in the north. Today Lake Powell has almost 2000 miles of shoreline.
