Dealey Plaza National Historical Landmark - Dallas Texas

Images of Dealey Plaza - Dallas Texas, taken in August 2016.

November 22, 1963, 12:30 p.m.

Shots rang out wounding Texas Governor John Connally and President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, a half hour later ending the life of the thirty-fifth President of the United States. The shots were fired by Lee Harvey Oswald from the southeast corner sixth floor window of the Texas School Book Depository at the corner of Elm and Houston.

It happened here in Dealey Plaza and although there are those that believe in conspiracies regarding why it happened, how it happened or who did the shooting; it is easy to stand on the street and believe that the shots could come from that sixth floor window, the car carrying the president driving away from that building in roughly a straight line.

No matter what one believes this area has been designated as a National Historical Landmark because of the events of that day but this plaza was originally created to mark the site that is considered the birthplace of Dallas which was founded in the 1840s by John Neely Bryan. The plaza itself was named after civic leader and city planner George Bannerman Dealey.
