Garden of the Gods – Colorado

The Garden of the Gods is a public park located just west of Colorado Springs which was donated to the city by an early settler who insisted that it always be free to the public.

This park is an extraordinary collection of red sandstone rock formations and spires wedged among the sprawl of the surrounding city and subdivisions. It is certainly a testament to the efforts of those who work hard to keep the park in the best shape possible. It is truly a garden, not only of rock but open areas filled with forests and animals. My only objection was to the number of people that were allowed to climb all over the beautiful rock formations; whether they were companies that had permits to lead rock climbing excursions or children set free by their parents to climb anywhere they wanted including on the Cathedral Spires themselves! In a state where people can find an almost unlimited number of places to climb that no one would object to why would it be permissible to climb on these one-of-a-kind formations? And what are we teaching children about protecting wonders like these? It takes me back to a few months ago in Arches National Park where I came upon a guy walking on top of Double-O Arch. Signs all over the place forbid people from climbing on the formations but there he was…I yelled at him to get down and, after I was backed up by others, he relented and got down. I wonder where he got the idea that this was okay, probably as an unrestrained child…

Cool photos. We are visiting here in September as well. My traveling buddy has a friend who actually lived for several months without anyone catching him lol

Awesome photos. I particularly like the animal and flower photos. We visited Garden of the Gods in May and saw the beautiful rock formations but not the wildlife and flowers in bloom. Thanks for sharing!
