Talkeetna and the Devil’s Gorge – Alaska

Talkeetna Alaska was my jumping off point for two of my Alaskan adventures, the K2 flight to the Ruth Amphitheater on Mount McKinley and my jet boat trip up the Chulitna River to Devil’s Canyon and the Devil’s Horn, the wall of water that is the beginning of a class four rapids.

Unfortunately it was again overcast, which made me realize how lucky I was to see all of Mount McKinley when I took the bus tour through Denali National Park. From the Susitna River the view of the mountain is usually spectacular but on this day we were only able to view a small swatch of the Alaskan Range, an interesting view none the less. Our jet boat trip up the Chulitna River was fascinating but uneventful until we reached the Devil’s Gorge and battled our way up to the Devil’s Horn, the four foot wall of water that would be our turnaround point. Before making our about-face our pilot held us in place there so we could get pictures and experience the power of the water, impressive indeed.
