Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island – Maine

Mount Desert Island is the heart of Acadia National Park. The park road takes you through lush forests, along the rugged coastline and to the top of the tallest mountain on the Atlantic coast, Cadillac Mountain, giving you spectacular views in all areas. I spent most of my time along the coast taking in the sounds of the ocean striking the shore and studying the many picturesque sites from Otter Point to the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.

Early one morning I made my way up to Cadillac Mountain to view the sunrise. Because of the height of the mountain (1530 ft.) it is the spot where the sun’s rays first fall on the continental US each morning. That day sunrise was at 4:51 a.m. and although cloud cover delayed those first rays of light it was a spectacular experience none the less. And since I was up, I had plenty of time to take in the early morning sunlight along the coast as well.
