Entrance to Oplontis

This is the ramp down to the villa at Oplontis. One can see the excavation work necessary to expose it. This is not ash, but a matrix of rock. Early excavation by the Bourbons, who were more concerned with decorating their palace than uncovering history, involved tunneling. A hole from this can be seen above the portico in this photo. Modern day Torre Annunziata surrounds the site.
