This a hot table, or "Tavola Calda," where there is hot food to eat. One can still find a Tavola Calda in Italy today. It was really neat to read about and visit the ruins at Mt. Vesuvius, then see all of the old traditions still followed to this day in Naples. It's part of what makes Naples so much more interesting to me than other parts of Italy.
