Pond Damsels: Damsels and Sprites

Two damsels and two sprites are found in the Ottawa area. The most common is the Sedge Sprite, a tiny, metallic green damselfly often seen flying among the tall vegetation of a variety of wetlands, including marshes, ponds, and lakeshores. The Sphagnum Sprite is very rare, and prefers fens and bogs. Equally rare is the Eastern Red Damsel, another tiny damselfly with a unique black and red colouration. It is found in shallow, spring-fed areas and seeps. The Aurora Damsel is considered uncommon, and prefers ponds, lakes and clear streams.
