Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis)

Petrie Island, Ottawa

Christina Lewis and I went to Petrie Island specifically in search of the Hackberry Emperor, a species that is found nowhere else in the Ottawa circle. As soon as I stepped out of the car onto the gravel parking lot I noticed a butterfly flying low to the ground not ten feet away. I pointed it out to Chris, then realized I didn't recognize it. I told Chris that I knew I hadn't seen it before, so she caught it in her net and placed it in the jar for closer examination. It was, of course, a Hackberry Emperor and the main reason for our visit! I took a couple of photos of it in the jar for posterity, hoping to get some better ones "in the wild" after we let it go. The emperor had other plans, and flew to the tops of the trees upon its release instead of perching on a nice flower. Of course, that was the only one we saw during our visit!

Nice. Butterflies always have a mind of their own! At least you got this picture in a bottle.
