The Longmen Grottoes are located south of Luoyang city. They are one of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. There are tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples. The name longmen means "The dragon gate", but it used to be called Yique, which means "The Gate on the Yi River".
The construction of the grottoes has started in the 5th century AD, and has been since carried on for about one thousand years.
This site is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
