Montevideo is Uruguay's capital. It has a lot of great architecture, which we found interesting. The city does have a lot of street graffiti, which for the most part is well done - for the most part. But we did find the city to be quite filled with litter, which was ubiquitous until the traveled out into the country side on our shore excursion to visit Varela Zarrantz winery. Uruguay's claim to fame in grapes is the tannat, which produces excellent red wine.
Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America - behind Suriname - and has a population of about 3.7 mil, about 3 mil of whom live in Montevideo. While Buenos Aires is located about 250 miles up the Plata River where it is a little narrower, Montevideo is located near the mouth which is about 100 miles wide, widest in the world. The government is structured much like the US. Voting is compulsory. Marijuana is legal. We eventually wound up at a regional winery - imagine that. An amazing wine-paired lunch was followed by a short tango show. All quite good.
