The Quest made the very short sail from Castro to Puerto Montt overnight, a city of about 250,000 people. The area is highly Germanic in character with many houses faced with shingles and very steep roofs, although it doesn't snow here. The towns in the area even have a Deutche Schule after which graduates can speak Spanish, English and German.
Our excursion took us to the lake district where volcanoes dot the landscape along with beautiful mountains. The snow-capped and stunningly beautiful volcano, Osorno, dominates the vistas in the area. One of the volcanoes, Calbuco, last erupted in 2015 covering the surrounding area in volcanic ash. Lake Llanquihue is the second largest in Chile and fifth largest in South America. We enjoyed a catamaran cruise on Lake Todos Los Santos in Vicente Perez Rosales National Park that allowed great vistas of the area. Following the cruise we stopped at the Petrohue Rapids which were pretty dramatic especially with the backdrops. The business district of Puerto Montt was beautifully landscaped with roses and azaleas. All in all a wonderful day for our last port of call.
After Puerto Montt, the Quest sailed for one more sea day until reaching San Antonio, one of the cruise ships ports near Santiago, Chile. From there, we were bused to the Santiago airport for our return trip.
