DAY 12 ANTARCTICA - DAMOY POINT

From Paradise Bay, the Quest sailed all night south to the Argentine Islands only to find the locked in by sea ice and not safe for transit or landings. So the captain, reversed course and sailed north to Damoy Point on the west side of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago. The location features the Damoy Hut which was built in 1973 and operated as an air transfer point for researchers traveling to various assignments until 1993. Today the hut is maintained as historic monument to show what people had to endure to work in Antarctica. Unfortunately, I was not feeling too well that day, and the new snow was reported to very deep and difficult to walk through. With the hut being over a half mile from the landing point, we opted to observe from the ship. Because Damoy Point was a last minute decision of the captain, another cruise ship was in the bay when we arrived. Because regulations do not allow more than 100 people to land at a time, our landings were delayed until the other cruise ship left the area. We were treated to a couple of humpback whales frolicking in the waters as the ship made its way north towards the Drake Passage.
