In February 2010, Jane and I were fortunate to be able to joing a group of birders to participate in a bird survey on the island of Cuba. The group operated under a State Department sublicense issued to the Caribbean Conservation Trust. It was a wonderful experience to visit the island and help survey it avian population. We were accompanied the entire trip by a naturalist guide and a cultural guide. Both made us feel welcome and helped explain Cuba as it exists today. We started in Havana, and then traveled to San Diego de Los Banos to the west. The next stop was the Guanahacabibes Penisula on the far western tip of the island. We back tracked through Havana to drop off a guide and then traveled south from Havana to the Zapata Penisula. Our final survey area was to the east in and around Camaguey. We ended the trip with a wonderful tour of the old city section of Havana.
