Camaguey is located about one third of the island's length from the eastern point where Guantanamo is located. The area is very arid compared to the western parts of the island. Camaguey was originally on the coast, but after being plundered multiple times by pirates, the city was relocated inland and designed with a maze of streets to make pirate attacks logistically more difficult.
