In the centre of the Old Town Square is a landscaped garden with the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, built in 1886 by a well-to-do Straits Chinese, at one end. At the other end is a large fountain carved from red English marble, built in 1901 to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.
