Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the oldest in India. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism. Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges remits sins, and death at Varanasi brings salvation. Hence, many Hindus cremate their deads in Varanasi. |
