This is the very beginnings of a coconut sprout trying to be a tree. Our guide Fernando had been through this same area just two days earlier and it wasn't there then. The shell has split with roots below and leaves above. The biosphere doesn't waste any time around here. The red ribbon on the tree is a trail marker.
