October 20, 2006

The seas picked up a little bit and tried to spit us out a few times. But, once we descended the surface, we found peace again. The last two dives were wonderful. While on the surface, the ocean revealed its power. Below, it continued to reveal its beauty in its detail. This little shrimp had found its home in the sea anemone. Like a house with an ADT security system, the anemone’s poison keeps away predators. I was perfectly happy being a voyeur just looking in the window of this shrimp’s home.

We also finished up with lectures. The Continuing Medical Education certificate stated 24 hours, a full day’s worth. I have a little bit more understanding of diving/hyperbaric medicine and a much larger appreciation for its complexity.

The evening was spent enjoying the company of new friends. We shared food, drinks, and stories. This conference drew people from many corners, fields, and generations. It was a pleasure getting to know a handful of them in these different settings.

It has been a very pleasant and productive week. And, I’m thankful that Renu was able to join me on this adventure. Life flies by so quickly some days at home with all that we have to accomplish. So, I feel fortunate that this trip has allowed us to spend much of each day together. This week, like all trips, has to end. But, as it draws close to the time of returning back to “real life” I’m very glad that Renu will be on that trip as well.
