Vasco da Gama’s voyages led to the riches of the spice trade, which inspired King Manuel I to order the creation of a monastery for the Order of St. Jerome in the barrio of Belem, from which explorations had sailed.
In the course of the 16th century, the builders created the elaborate Manueline style, reflecting the king’s passion for the sea and for Portugal’s newly-discovered territories.
