When U.S. Secretary of State Seward purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million,
the deal was mocked as “Seward’s Folly” and the territory as “Seward’s Ice Box.”
Even back then, the press often got it wrong...
The territory of Alaska became the 49th American state in 1958.
