A picture is worth a thousand words indeed. Though China has probably gone through the most drastic changes (particularly along the Eastern shorelines that Dr. McConochie voyaged) since these photographs were taken. I wonder if the owner of that bike in Suzhou has purchased a moped as a result of China's recent national initiative to expand the use of electrical products with the state providing coupons to suppliers.

Great pictures. Reminds me home. Capture today's China: comfortable relaxed life style (the morning ballroom dancing) vs. poverty (the almost-broken hut along the river bank).
