This is another whale watching trip with Island Adventures, www.island-adventures.com. This time we took their 8-hour cruise out of La Conner, Washington that stops for lunch at Lopez Island. This time all the orcas we saw were part of what are called “Transient” pods. However, as the naturalist on board explained, the terms transient and resident are not really accurate. Even the “Resident” pods sometimes head up toward Alaska and down to California. The differences are really those that are fish eaters, called resident, and those that eat meat, like seals, sea lions, etc. that are called transient. Since all we saw on this trip were hunting seals and sea lions, they are meat eaters and are labeled as Transients. We saw one large male, T51, wandering around on his own and many females with young.
