This is a small Samoan Fale. These used to be what Samoans lived in. They would have a thatched mat floor with a fire pit in the center. The weather is moderate all year round so walls were not needed. Today they are mostly used for ceremonial purposes as well as tribal or family gatherings. They are found all over American Samoa, most considerably larger than this small one in the national park.
