American Samoa and National Park, May 2019

We spent 3 days exploring the National Park of American Samoa and the rest of the island. American Samoa is a territory of the United States, where virtually everyone speaks both Samoan and English. It is in the South Pacific, just below the equator. It is also right next to the International dateline which runs between Samoa and American Samoa. Along with multiple drives into the national park, over the three days we drove around both the Eastern and Western extremes of the island. To us, the other very interesting thing about American Samoa was the fruit bats. These bats have wingspans of up to 3 feet and are active both day and night. We found several locations where we could reliably see them and stopped at these locations several times for photos. Getting photos of them in flight was difficult, but well worth the many shots where we missed or were very blurry! Do note that these are “fruit” bats and do not attack animals or people!

I have divided my gallery into two sub-galleries. One for the park and island and the other just for the fruit bats.
