Mt. Baker and North Cascade National Park Areas, Oct 2019
We spent 4 nights camping in Concrete, WA and used that as a base camp to explore Baker Lake, Mt. Baker Hwy, and North Cascades area. The day after we arrived was still overcast and raining, so on that day we drove up to Baker Lake which is less than 20 miles from Concrete, WA and hiked a couple of trails in that area. It is a very nice area and there were lots of mushrooms to photograph. The next day was sunny and we drove north to get to Mt. Baker Hwy (542) and took that east as far as we could. At first, the hwy was closed just east of the small town of Glacier as the were cutting down dangerous trees along the hwy. So, we used that time to take a short hike along the Nooksack River, and to drive up to Mt. Baker Viewpoint, after a picnic lunch. It was obvious that they had gotten snow the day before as Mt. Baker and the trees as we drove higher had fresh snow on them. We then drove down, and found that the road up past Mt. Baker Ski area was no longer closed. We could not quite get to Artist Point, but at least the road around Picture Lake and Highwood Lake was still open. We were able to get great reflecton shots of Mt. Shuksan (which is in North Cascades NP) in both of these lakes. On our last day of exploring, we drove through the North Cascades Complex to Washington Pass, which is about 24 miles East of the North Cascades Complex. There are lots of beautiful Alpine Larch at this location which are a golden color at this time of the year. Next, about 10 miles back the way we came is Rainy Pass. There we took a hike out to Rainy Lake. Finally, we stopped at the Diablo Lake Overlook for some last photos within the North Cascades Complex.
