Greg Beard I was with C Co, 78th Combat Eng Oct 67 thru June 68. I was the motor pool clerk. Saved money to bring wife over. After 7 months had enough to bring her over. After her being there 3 days, I came down on levy for Nam and they wondered why I would never reup.

I was in Combat Engineer D Company of (I think) the 78th, in Ettlingen, for 19 months in 1967-68. We had a one year NATO training cycle which consisted of squad test, platoon test, company test and finally six weeks of battalion test in Grafenwohr. Then it started all over again. After 19 months of that fun, humping bridge and freezing my butt off, on the day I had one year left in the Army I came down on levy for Viet Nam. As bad as Nam was I have to say the Army Combat Engineers were much better over there than they were in Germany. I loved the country and the people of Germany but the Army was miserable, not much different from Basic or AIT.

Was at Neureut Kaserne from June 64 to Dec 66 with the 40th Ordnance Company.
CO was Capt Charles M. Holt, Jr, then Capt Richard L. Hassell took over.
1st Sgt was named Montgomery, he was the boss. The officers did what he told them.

I was in "The Zoo," Bravo Co, 78th Engr. (SFC Duarte's & LT Heinz' platoon) from Jan 72 until transfer to ADM, then off to 275th at Coffee Barracks until Sept 75. Lots of memories from that place, most good (except bridging the Rhein). I still have LOTS of B&W photos of that era, some field problems with the 78th, some of the 275th at Coffee. Can't seem to remember all the names these days.

Charlie pace...nice to see a name I remember...my name is Rodney stell..was assigned C co..march 86-87...can't say much good about company...insubordinate squad members...poor leadership...a worthless 1st Sgt (Ava)......and a spineless company commander..(morris).left C Co with service connected injury..and was forced out of the Army....best thing they ever done for me...but on the good note..4yrs in Germany was a blast.

Hallo jedes..i was at Rheinland with the 78th., hhc s-4 from 66-68..i just saw that one of my postings is still on after 5 years..yes we go back when we can..have been back 13 times since..visit my wife's family in Ettlingen, Karsruhe and Busenbach..Last over was 3 years ago..I have pictures of myself and my children in front of the old iron exit gate in front of Fritz..they all spent a year in Germany after h.s. graduation..now i have a pix of my 8 yr old granddaughter with me at front of the gate...all kids also went to the Luisenstube by swimmbad..same corner where i sat with my future wife..she was 16 then i 20...how time goes..i love the area and wish i could afford to live over there, but i have to hit the lotto first...lol..lol..my email is alexxa1998@aol.com and i live in Harlingen, Texas down by South Padre Island...

hi, i was at rhineland kas from oct 1954 to feb 1957,was in 87th pipeline for a while and when it transfered, i went to 77th. i was co clerk in 87th and then truck driver.in 77th i picked up supplies in manheim,heidleburg,stutgart and kiaslaughtern then i moved to the motor pool and drove a loboy hauling heavy equip. i hauled 3 of the first 5 bells cast in germany after the war, to a church (christ church) in heidleberg.many good memories.bernie joyner,dudley myers,allen clark,frank lawson,gaylord moncada, and many others, would like to hear from anyone that was there then. ray

I was stationed in the 502nd eng.co 1st platoon neureut 1990-1992,I had some real good times there.I remember they had a great mess hall and a cool kanteen there.I remember we had junky vehicles and boats to use,however the 93rd had all the good new equipment. we had this crazy sargent who told us to aquire things from the 93rd if we really needed them. so we would sometimes sneak in the motor pool and swap our old equipmet for 93rds newer stuff.man I miss those old days bridging the rhine.if you were in the 502nd 1st platoon and want to talk about old times. clintcpd@bellsouth.net

i was bravo co. from 01/84 til 07/85, i had a riot there, the fritz , the dinger,drank many many monigers, at least when i wasn't in graf or wieldfleken or augsburg. i think the retaraunt was called the rhineland eck, and dude named mario ran it, awesome lasagna. the only thing i hated about that place was running up that hill towards the tower for pt in the morning, that hill just never seemed to stop and we couldn't sound off until we crossed under the autobahn where the volksmarch trails were.

I am Randy Morgan, I've been reading a lot of the comments about the 78th. I would like to hear from anyone who was stationed there. I was stationed at Rheinland 66-68..78th Eng,HHC,S-4..many good memories..go back every 2-3years..for a couple of year every year because my mother in law was very sick..i married a girl from Ettlingen..she was 16 and i 20 when we met..went out only 3 times, got married later and have been married 35 years now..i took have a ton of pixs of Ettlingen..make plenty every time we go..have some old ones when the Kaserne was an nco academy for the Nazis..got them from photograpy teacher at the kaserne.

I was in Rheinland Kaserne from July of 74 to August of 75. I knew Gene Strickland. When he got out I believe he lived in Hazelwood, Illinois, just north of St Louis.
I remember a guy named Pollack and I think he was the Movie House guy.
I was SP/4 Battalion S-4 Clerk down in the basement of HQ company. I remember my first night there I went up to the NCO Club and met a guy named Bob (don't remember his last name) that was in Charlie Company in the 78th He made me feel right at home. I told him he was like the welcome wagon committee. Our paths didn't cross much due to me being in HQ company and all but being a young kid in a foreign county this guy made it alright. Anyone that feels they knew me or just wants to contact someone from that time frame my email is listed on my profile .

I was with the 502nd. of the 565th. in Neureut Kaserne Nov.89- July92. I was a cook, and our CO was Capt. Franks. How I miss them days and Germany. Going to "Wildchicken" was always a blast, bors infested the whole area everytime we were there making the nights cold and scary. I tell my son about all the good times I had and the Parkbrau Perminator I drank, but he has his mind set for U. of Texas or Rice U. here in Houston. More power to him.....

I was stationed at Rheinland from 87' to 91' with HHC, 78th EN BN(C). Ettlingen and Karlsruhe had such an impact upon me that I ended up staying in the Army until my retirement last year. Of all my assignments, Rheinland was my favorite. My friends and I spent many a crazy Saturday night in downtown Karslruhe at the Krokodile. I'm living in Germany now, married to the same girl I met from Karlsruhe almost twenty-one years ago. Like most people on the web site have said, much has changed at Rheinland. I go back to look at the old Kaserne from time to time. A lot is gone, but there is enough left to bring back some great memories. Rheinland, the 78th Engineers, and Karlsruhe are places I'll never forget.

Rudy, the kasserne is at the corner of Durlacher and Huttenkreuzstrasse. In Google Earth it's easy to find, it's the light colored area just north of the town center of Ettlingen.

By the way, I was there from 83-85 in C Co, 78th.

My first assignment was with the 78th Engr Bn (C) when it was in a barracks in Karlsruhe and then in '65 we moved to Rheinland Kaserne in Ettlingen. Before leaving in 1966, I was assigned to the 555 Engr Gp (C). Does anyone know the side street on which The Rheinland Kaserne was located? I was trying to find it on Google Earth but my memory is not sufficient.

Steve, are you still in touch with Steve McBride? He and I were bunking in the same room for a while with Stan Oliver and Eric Zanardi. I tried looking him up when I was in Colorado a few years ago, but no luck.

I was in Ettlingen in 1974 at Rhineland Kaserne. My buddy Steve McBride and I were assigned to "C" Company. I then went with the ADM Platoon and met a lot of good people. In 1975 we moved to Coffey Barracks in Ludwigsburg when they combined all the ADM platoons into the 275th Engr Co (ADM). We missed Rhineland but there was also a MASH unit stationed at Coffey and the ratio of women went from 5 women to 500 men at Rhineland to 100 women to 300 men at Coffey.

I was stationed at Rheinland Keserne with the 78th. from 1971 to 1973. Amazing pictures, it is so nice to see the old base. I know a lot is gone, but these pictures help. I was in HHC.co. Stationed here from 1991-1994. I still live very close to here. Everything behind, to include the shopette is gone. The bowling alley is also gone, but all other buildings are in use. I go there about once a month to bring back the memories.

I was with C Company 78th Engineers from 73 to 75. I recognize the name of Dave Boynton on these comments. Dave was from Brockton, MA. I live in Bourne, MA now and work at Otis Airbase. I returned to the base now used as housing in 2001. Bob Zwahlen

Really weird to see the base at it is now, and have the jarring disconnect of what it was then, in your mind. I was there 1985 to 1987 in C.Co.78th Engr.Bn. A.M.F. These are great photos you took of the Kaserne, Ettlingen(me and Danny Brown got drunk as skunks at the Weingarten many a time and have many good memories of Ettlingen. Thanks for posting this on the web.

I was stationed at the Rheinland Kaserne in Ettlingen in 1964. I was with the 502nd Engineer Floating Bridge company, and I am thrilled to find these pictures of the kaserne. I transferred from the 502nd to the 55th Engineer Panel bridge company at Smiley Barracks in Karlsruhe after making SGT E5, and stayed at Smiley until I left Germany in late 1967. These pictures of the Kaserne, and other pictures of Ettlingen are greatly appreciated.
