Southern Rhode Island is a strange mix of commuter suburbs, back woods towns, fishing communities and tourist traps. In the winter much of the area is a ghost town; in the summer the beach traffic hardly moves. On one side of Newport is the country's largest concentration of wealth overlooking the Atlantic; on the other are trailer parks and housing projects. In places the natural beauty is astounding, in others it's a strip mall miles long that could be anywhere else in the US. I guess it's like a thousand other regions striving to keep up with sudden growth and an influx of tourism, and still retain its identity. |
