win the war

My mom and I finally made time to go through a few boxes of old family photos, dating back as far as the 1870's. Of course I grabbed a bunch to scan and restore.

This tube was sent by my grandfather to his mother close to the end of WW2. Note the stamp and lack of a zip code (not introduced until the 1960's). He was on the young end and went to the US Naval Training Center, Sampson, NY, near Geneva on Seneca Lake. He developed complications from rheumatic fever, and by the time he recovered the war was over. His older brother served in the Army in Europe.

Hail the memento pack rats of the world! I think ZIP (zone improvement program) codes were introduced in 1963.
