Rhode Island is officially the "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."
Rhode Island is now known as Aquidneck Island, home to Newport.
Legend has it Verrazano sailed into Narragansett Bay and remarked that the island looked like the Isle of Rhodes.
Obviously the rum hadn't run out.
Providence Plantations was all the rest.
