Gaslamp-lit Benefit Street is where everyone who was anyone moved in the very late 18th century, when
Providence between the rivers was getting overcrowded. They emptied the cemeteries that used to line
the hill and built stately houses. Maybe that's why Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft felt so at home
in this neighborhood.
