Ashes, ashes

North Providence, RI

Ash from the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens, collected by a family friend who happened to be working as a geologist in the area. The volume of the ash has decreased by about two thirds over the past 29 1/2 years.

If the ash was very fine, I would guess it is slowly compacting under gravity.
