#10 - Cabbage Tree

Jan 2014 Challenge - Trees

Cordyline australis / Maori - Ti Kouka
One of the most common NZ native plants.
It is the worlds tallest monocotyledon growing up to 10 metres high.
It has a tall straight trunk or trunks and a dense round head with a sphere of long narrow leaves
and it is a major characteristic feature of the N.Z. landscape.
The Cabbage Tree was used by the Maori people and early settlers.
The pith and inner roots were used to make a kind of porridge.
The early Europeans used hollowed out trunks as chimneys as they do not burn.

No, it doesn't grow cabbages

I'd have no trouble in eating my greens if such a beauty sprouts cabbages!
