The Long Island Motor Parkway, also known as the Vanderbilt Parkway, Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, or Motor Parkway, was a roadway on Long Island, New York, in the United States.
It was the first roadway designed for automobile use only.
The first section of the road was finished in time for the popular 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, and the races continued there until 1910, when three spectators were killed and twenty others injured.
In 1912, the parkway was fully opened to the public as a private toll road for its entire 45-mile length.
It wasn’t like Willie K built the road for the public.
He built it so he could race his cars on it.
Besides being an animal killer Vanderbilt had a thing for speed.
These are some of his cars parked in the garage at Eagle’s Nest.
The garage had a turntable in it so he wouldn’t have to back the car out.
Wow, what the rich spend their money on.
