The Great White Hunter...ugh!

October 26,1878 - January 8, 1944

I thought this gallery should include a photo of William Kissam Vanderbilt II.
It disturbed me seeing this painting of him after a hunt in Africa.
However this is how the man lived.
I personally think animals should be hunted with a camera rather than a gun but I didn’t live in those times.
Willie owned a hunting lodge and preserve in Canada, a farm in Tennessee, a place at Fisher’s Island in Florida
(complete with seaplane hangar, docking facilities,
an eleven-hole golf course with each hole named after one of his yachts, tennis courts, and swimming pool),
and the summer estate at Centerport, Eagle’s Nest.
William died in early 1944 of a heart ailment.
His estate, along with a $2,000,000 fund for its perpetuation, was left to Suffolk County, Long Island.

Really interesting capture - and the caption, too! V

Wonderful capture. Those were the times this was admired.

You made a great image and did a powerful narration of what we see here.
I wish I could go and hunt these magnificent animals with my camera.
I hope their population is doing well in these different times.

I agree with Tom Beach, also thanks for showing and reminding us of how cruel this is. V

Ugh indeed. At least some change since those times, though not so much with people killing each other.
Julie Oldfield23-Jan-2024 01:31
It’s definitely a relic of the time in he lived in.
Pierre Martin22-Jan-2024 19:03
in these times that was more acceptable by the society, another story today!

I agree with you about the hunting, certainly that done for sport and trophy rather than for food or for herd control. I guess you can be too rich.
Walter Otto Koenig22-Jan-2024 17:40
I'm with you on hunting. At least he was generous in his will.

it's hardly a triumph to snuff out a life merely for a trophy...what a twisted idea for a self-aggrandizing portrait...a solid image to characterize this fellow..

These old time were very cruel. I don’t like hunting with guns at all. The camera is just fine and I agree with Tom!

nice photo but a sad story about the hunting process.V.

So sad to see! Thank you for sharing. V

Ugh is right, this is horrible (not your photo, but what the painting depicts). Agree that some of the money should have gone to wildlife conservation since he seemingly did his best to deplete animal populations. Not a pleasant person.
Tom Beech22-Jan-2024 13:09
Some of the money should have gone to an African wildlife fund

Great shot and narrative that say a lot about the man, not a story that I particularly like. V.
