Political Martyrs' Monument

It seems like every large city has an obelisk.
We saw the one in Edinburgh while walking the Royal mile.
This is the Martyrs' Monument, a needle-like obelisk designed by Thomas Hamilton.
It was built to commemorate five men who dreamed of a democratic political system at the end of the eighteenth century.

What an unexpected pairing of structures - one castle with a nearby miniature version of the Washington Monument. ~BV~

A telling contrast in architecture between the monument and castle. V

Typical Scottish weather. That's quite a 'tombstone' for the five whose political dreams were not wrong.

Interesting comparing the simplicity of the obelisk with the complexity of the castle.

at least it salutes local heroes, and is not plunder from Egypt like so many around Europe...it balances with the crenellated tower well, and both contrast with the natural shapes of trees..

Very nice view of the castle. The obelisk seems strangely out of place but adds to the composition. "V"
