When Architecture Goes in the Toilet

This is the view from our hotel room after a very full day.
The photo was taken through some very old glass but the late day light was rather nice.
We had seen this strange looking top to a building several times while walking through Edinburgh.
We finally googled it up and this is what we found.
Crafted from a winding steel 'ribbon', the design has been likened to spirals of paper, a reference to the many printing presses which occupied surrounding areas in times past.
The vision for the hotel includes a lofty bar, lounge and restaurant space boasting 360 degree panoramic views over the city.
The trouble is Edinburgh's ridiculed 'poop emoji' hotel is branded a 'white elephant' by furious locals as 'eyesore' remains closed to the public two years after it was due to open.

A nice scene is ruined by someone with a really dumb idea...

Crazy that there was even permission for a building like that to be built!

Fantastic light and contrast between the two buildings.

Great thru-the-glass low-light photo. The hotel building does look a bit odd.

The light accents in this frame are amazing- even on the poop.

it's said that you can't polish a turd, yet that one looks shiny, if out of place...the warm light at this moment is fantastic..

Lovely view with beautiful light.
Isabel Cutler20-Jul-2023 14:46
What an amazing contrast. I would probably clone out the eyesore since the rest of the image looks like an Old Masters' painting. V.
Tom Beech20-Jul-2023 14:36
And so it should be... some great looking old locations should not allow modern designs to be built in the first place. Indeed this was special light you captured here.

A fantastic image with that light. The emoji story is head-scratching VVV~
Helen Betts20-Jul-2023 13:45
Great composition showing classic and new architecture. Seems to me their reaction to the "emoji" building is a bit over the top. V.
