Our guide told us there were a few mooning statues in Cologne.
At first I thought I misheard him.
Then he pointed out some figures up high.
In 1956 architect Jupp Engels bought a war damaged site on the Alter Markt and constructed a building that later, in 1986, won a design award.
Engels was a lover of old local traditions and customs, he had attached to the facade of his new building a small statue, the Kallendresser, made by German sculptor Ewald Mataré.
Kallendresser are statues that have tradition back to medieval times, they are bared bottom figurines doing their business in the house gutter (the word Kall translates into gutter).
There are several theories about the origin of such figures, from simply being the rooftop dweller relieving himself in the quickest yet crudest manner to a dispute between business owners or even some sort of political statement.
There are several other mooning statues in the city but this was the only one I got a photo of.
So here is both a front and back view.
