When the original explorers of the caverns were exploring the caves they saw this shape in the distance.
The light from their oil lamps made it look like it was shimmering.
Because it could be seen from several areas throughout the cavern they thought it was a ghost.
When one of the explorers gather the courage to go touch it they realized what it was.
From that point on it was used as a reference point.
