Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle is one of only four remaining "original" (wooden, not concrete reconstructions) castles in Japan. It was built over 400 years ago. I went to the way more famous Himeji Castle on the same trip, but I would have to say Matsumoto-jo is the most beautiful Japanese castle I've visited.

Ritsuko and I visited this splendid castle on the 13th of April 2005, I convinced her that we had to come here because I had been told by a Japanese Castle Connoisseur this is the best castle in Japan. After visiting the castle we stayed over night at a nearby Onsen (Hot Spring) which was a real treat too.

"Even if you only spend a couple of hours in Matsumoto, make sure you visit this castle" - Lonely Planet Japan (8th edition)
