Himeji Castle (or Himeji-jo in Japanese) is one of only four remaining "original" (rather than a modern concrete reconstruction) castles in Japan, this one dates back to about 1600. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and has been used as location in a number of films including the Bond film "You Only Live Twice" and "The Last Samurai". This is the third location in Japan for "You Only Live Twice" that I've visited.
We were actually planning to visit Himeji on later date of the trip, but due to Ritsuko's aunty being called out of town we rearranged our schedule to make Himeji our first stop. Also on this trip we visited the less famous, but more beautiful (IMHO) Matsumoto Castle.
