After five trips to Japan, Shiga-ken (Shiga prefecture) would probably be one of my favourite places in Japan. Centred by Biwa-ko (Lake Biwa) and surrounded by mountains Shiga-ken is a place of breath taking scenery. Between the mountains and lake, the fertile lands are teaming with life, creating a truly amazing paradise on earth.
The people of Shiga-ken are also wonderful; from the farmers who cultivate the fields, the crafts people who make traditional goods using techniques passed down from generation to generation, the fishermen who catch a rich bounty from the rivers and Biwa-ko, and the artists who set up studios here for inspiration.
We spent a week in Shiga-ken (mostly in Omi-Imazu) taking all of this in and wanting to stay forever! It was so hard to get motivated to go back to Kobe.
