Pentax SMC-DA 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 Superzoom Lens

This lens is said to be a rebadge of the excellent Tamron 18-250. It appears to be very well-built and has good image quality for a lens of its type. I expect that it will be an excellent walkaround/travel lens.

Page 1 shows the lens at its minimum and maximum extension, along with a few of the initial test shots I took using my Pentax K10D DSLR. Page 2 shows some typical images of various subjects. All images are unadjusted except for exposure (levels).

This lens will be on my bag when on travel which need a compactness luggage. Its performance at any focal length is more than acceptable for general use phothograpy. For maximum performance, I still need some prime lens to accompany it and didn't impact much on weight. My only complaint is not have well ballance on my Pentax *ist DL when extended nor shorted. BTW, this lens is good move from Pentax which lack on this wide focal length and will be very atractive for almost everyone.

As convenient as this lens might be its expensive. Current Canadian pricing for the Pentax SMC-DA 18-250mm is $550. Even if you buy the K1**D body by itself the 18-55 and the 50-200 lens run $400 together, buy the K1**D body with the 18-55 kit and technically it only costs you $70-ish plus $200 for the 50-200. IQ is no better and you lose a stop at the long end, 6.3 on the 18-250 and 5.6 on the 50-200.

The savings would get you another lens and filters, eg; the excellent P-FA 50mm F1.4.
